Fall has come and gone, and I neglected to write a post about the rec program here in Price. I wanted to write about the experience of playing sports in Carbon county because it was so enormously different than what we were all used to back in M.G.
First- soccer. We signed up Noodle, Sparky & Kenni because they all played before, and they (mostly) enjoy it, so I wanted them to have some recreation opportunities this year (instead of doing what they are all too happy to do- sit on their cans all day…..)
So, I went down to the rec. office & signed them up. The first thing I noticed is that it was so cheap! $20 per kid, and their old blue uniforms from Morgan would do just fine. Awesome. The next thing I noticed is that soccer is clearly not popular here in Price. In order to make enough teams, they have to combine girls & boys, and also combine several ages. As you can see- my kids all ended up on the same team- which was GREAT for practicing, but I had concerns about the level of play for a team that included both a 6 year old and a 10 year old. Seth volunteered to coach which was apparently a foreign concept to the rec. program as well. They pay the girls high school team members to coach. So, they gave Seth a cute little assistant. Her name was Kelsie.
Lets just say that the program was wildly unorganized, the games were a bit of a joke, and the fields were enough to drive Seth to drink. However, overall, it was a really great opportunity for all the kids. We ended up moving little Noodle down to a younger team, because he was nervous with all the big kids. But the level of competition was so much lower than any of the kids were used to, they all discovered they had talent they had never seen before :) You see- none of them are superior athletes, to say the least, but here- they were the star of the show. It was such a confidence booster (especially for little Sparky, who is finally starting to come into his own……)
They all did great, and had such a fun time. It was really a good experience for them. I just hope they aren’t too far behind when we get back to the high stress, parents screamin, kids hip-checkin & slide-tacklin soccer that we were used to back in M.G.
Ok- next. Football. I know- don’t die. Football & Wallace kids don’t go together. But again- this is Price we’re talking about, and things are a bit different. Seth found out that they run a flag football program for boys under 10, which we think is so great. I have never been comfortable with the idea of little boys playing tackle football, so we always knew it wasn’t something our sons would do. But Seth was sad that they wouldn’t have the opportunity to learn the sport & understand the rules. So, when he found out about flag football (and after seeing how laid-back the soccer program was), he decided this was the perfect way to give little Sparky the football experience, without the football experience- if you know what I mean.
It was very low-key. They had games Tuesdays & Thursdays over at the Elementary school, no practices. So it was pretty much like twice weekly scrimages for 6 weeks. Sparky had a blast and decided he does like football, as long as he doesn’t have to do much. He mostly just chased his teammates around laughing- like in the above picture.
We went to almost all of the games for both soccer and football as a family and the kids had a great time playing on the playgrounds at the school. It was a good chance for everyone to get out of the house, get some exercise, and make some attempt at socializing with the good people of P-rice.
One last extra-curricular to mention: Kenni found out about a play being put on by the local community theater. They were holding auditions the first week of school, so I drove her to Helper to attend. She was so excited. She now has play practice every week, and they will be performing “Thumbelina” in December. The greatest thing about community theater is that there is no cost- its free to participate. She thinks her play is hot stuff. (Its actually VERY low-budget and a little hoaky……), but she is having a ball and we’re excited to attend her performances. I’ll post about that later :)
Anyway- I think that about covers it. Now that sports are over, we’re back to mostly just hanging around the house. I’m trying to convince the kids to get involved with the kids choir at the school. They are rehearsing for their Christmas performances. Since we are NOT a musical family, mostly so far they have all told me to take a hike, so I guess I’ll have to think of some other way to keep them involved. I’m sure we’ll come up with something. We are the Wallaces after all…….
